The Importance of Involving Children in Cooking: Family Fun in the Kitchen

Cooking with children is about much more than meals — it’s a chance to create memories, teach life skills, and encourage a love of wholesome food. In our family, we involve our children in preparing everything from snacks to dinners, helping them understand ingredients and the joy of creating something from scratch.

One of our favourite activities is making homemade flatbreads. Instead of buying wraps, flatbreads, or naans, we make our own — a simple recipe that the kids can help with. This teaches them about cooking, gives them a sense of ownership, and avoids ultra-processed ingredients.

Easy Family Flatbreads Recipe (adapted from What Mummy Makes)

Ingredients:

  • 150g self-raising flour (or gluten-free alternative)
  • 150g natural or Greek yogurt (dairy or plant-based)
  • ½ tsp baking powder

Method:

  1. Mix the flour, yogurt, and baking powder in a bowl until it forms a soft dough.
  2. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about a minute until smooth.
  3. Divide the dough into 5 portions.
  4. Roll each portion into a thin circle.
  5. Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium-high heat.
  6. Cook each flatbread for 1–2 minutes on each side until lightly golden and puffy.

These flatbreads are fun for children to help make, from kneading to rolling, and are suitable for little ones from around 6 months (adjust thickness and size accordingly).

Why We Love Cooking with Our Children

  • Hands-on learning: Kids learn about ingredients, measurements, and kitchen safety.
  • Encourages independence: Giving them tasks fosters confidence and responsibility.
  • Family bonding: Cooking together is a relaxed, enjoyable way to spend time together.
  • Healthy choices: Making food from scratch avoids ultra-processed ingredients and allows experimentation with flavours and textures.

We often use the cookbook What Mummy Makes for inspiration — it’s full of simple, family-friendly recipes that the children enjoy helping with.
